Christmas preparations and grooming dogs

I am enjoying my time off this year...more than I did the previous two years. This is because I am not sick this year. I had the flu shot in time, I am not stressed and worn down as I usually am this time of year. Because of this, I can bake and clean and plan for visits with friends and family. With relish!

It's been sort of a neighborhood tradition to bake something tasty for our neighbors in the days prior to Christmas day. I don't know the exact year we started this event, nor do I remember how it began. It might have begun as a cookie swap one year amongst a few neighbors who wanted to participate, but over the years, without any further planning, it has evolved into a giving of baked goods or something pretty for the house. Usually the gifts are packed in bags, baskets, or tins. Sometimes it's something to eat, and sometimes it's something to make the house smell nicer. A special book, a card, a decoration for the tree. Always it is a surprise and a delight to see what my neighbors have made for us. It's been my greatest pleasure, of all the Christmas traditions, both religious and secular, to make gifts for my neighbors and friends as well.

Last year I had to opt out due to a disgusting little virus that took me out for nearly the entire holiday week.

But this year, I am whole and healthy (grateful for that, I am) and my kitchen is jumping with ingredients in bowls, measuring spoons and cups, while Christmas music plays spiritedly in the living room. I am most happy when I can putter in the kitchen undisturbed like this. Husband is at work today... I have the place to myself!

For my neighborhood gifts, I'm making Mug Ems... tasty little mixes that fill the mug. I assemble the ingredients, pour them into the little bags, decorate the mug, tie on the directions for mixing and baking, and voila! The recipient has to add an egg, or some milk, or some water, or vanilla (depending upon the recipe), then bakes it in the oven proof mug. It's a warm and delicious treat straight out of the oven or microwave.

In this picture I have assembled the mugs and bags... the mugs have to be larger, holding at least 1 1/2 cups. I found the little tie bags at Michaels, but zip lock baggies will do.

I do remember mentioning to a few of you through comments in your journals these past two weeks that I was not putting a tree up this year. However, I found a solution to the dilemma... I wanted a tree, but didn't want to put it up or take it down afterward. Too many parts. Too large. Didn't want to buy another one. But I did have this little tree, so I wrapped a candy garland around it and there... As you can see... I have a tree... Enough for you and me!

The pineapple upside down cake, one of my favorite cakes to bake for special occasions, is for tonight's dessert at my son's and his girlfriend's townhouse. Her parents are in town for a brief visit before Christmas day, and they invited us to come to dinner and spend time with them all. Since husband is working until late today, I will go alone. I like her parents and look forward to seeing them again, talking with them, catching up on the year with them. The cake is my contribution to tonight's meal... as they had told me I didn't have to bring anything. I know, but I like to bring something. I think it's the American way... or the Southern way.

After all the baking, my attention turned to my dogs. Both are begging for a bath and some grooming. You can see the look in his eyes, can't you?

Max wants me to comb his matted coat with that blade device on the right, which cuts through most matts quite effectively, then he wants me to trim his claw nails... followed by a bath.

Well (ahem), that wasn't really an accurate description of Max's feelings at the moment. He does not like the grooming, particularly the combing out of matted hair. He doesn't mind the bath as much as the de-matting.

Dogs with continuously growing hair, like mini-schnauzers, need grooming quite frequently or they will look like sheep or a shaggy dog very quickly.

If this is new to you, don't worry. I'll share some tips with you here in my journal, ideas and tools that worked for us.

It's not necessary to spend a fortune getting your dog groomed, and you don't have to take it to the groomers to get a decent job done. My husband and I taught ourselves. We were trying to save on the expenses.

First, we looked at the pictures of well groomed schnauzers. We read books about our breed of dog, talked to our vet. Then we bought some good grooming sheers, not the kind you use on people, but industrial quality like pet groomers buy. I talked with one groomer, asked her questions. She didn't mind sharing some of what she knew. I did pay her to trim my dog the first time, and she let me watch.

Generally, I trim them outside on a warmish day. But if I have to do it indoors, like when it's as cold as it has been this week, I just cover my floor with a sheet and get to work.

We learned how to groom them by experience. Since we don't show our dogs, it's not necessary to do a show dog quality hair trim. And because both dogs are allowed to run around outside, we have learned to trim the hair from around their legs and feet. It helps reduce the number of leaves, twigs, and seeds that get carried into our house each time they run out and in again.

A nail trimming tool is useful. Buy some good ones. Go for quality. If you are uncertain about trimming nails, do ask your pet's vet to show you how. It's easier if your dog's nails are white. The quick is easier seen. But our dogs have black toenails, so for us it's a good guess how much to cut off since we last trimmed them. It does take two of us to do the nails: one to hold the unwilling pet, and the other to trim the nails. It goes rather quickly once you get the hang of it.

Scissors to cut the hair away from their eyes and around their noses is a must for dogs with growing hair. I love seeing my puppy's adoring eyes. Finally, one needs a good comb for general combing.  For a pet-owner, these are the basic tools for grooming one's dog (and a brush).

Not pictured are the tweezers for pulling the hair from inside their ears (doesn't hurt if done correctly), and the toothbrush.

Do you groom your dog? If you have a specific implement or tool that helps make the job easier, let me know.

Dear Bea,  I am so glad that you feel fit and well this year, what a difference if we feel well. This is the first year for a couple of years that I have felt well as well !!   What a great idea these Mug Ems  are never heard of such a thing.  When you have time I will get you to give me some idea of what you actually put in the mugs.  It would be a great selling item at church  and as a gift of course.  Thanks also for the tips about grooming...I have never yet tried to trim Dee  but with the prices rising I soon will have to it costs £26 ($13) aprox  if my calculations are right...to have him done. He goes again in January...usually 3 times a year..  If I don't speak before  HAve a wonderful Blessed Christmas and may 2008 be full of happy healthy days for you and all those you love  Much Love  Sybil xx

What a wonderful tradition, Bea!  I would be excited about that.  I love your Mug Ems.  I just got my hair cut today.  Someone gave all the stylists a similar gift with blueberry muffin mix in it.  I thought it was a great idea.  I can't wai to see what you get in return.

LOL...Grizzly doesn't really need groomed, thank the Lord.  He's a lab mix.  He won't even let us get near his claws to trim.  In fact, most times, the vet has to sedate him.  That last time, they muzzled him.  He was so shocked for a couple of minutes that he didn't move and let them do it without sedation.  I don't think that trick will work forever.  We used to be able to semi groom him when he weighed far less.  I have to bathe him outside on his leash with the hose and buckets of warm water.  For some reason, he will behave on his leash outside.

Merry Christmas!  Hugs to you, Chris

What a wonderful idea. Doc's Aunt Jeannine is now the matriache of the family and has told Doc and I family Christmas is at our house next year. We are both floored, it's an honor to have them choose you to bring the family together. The Mug Em's would be great to give to each person to take home with them. Loved your little tree. You sound really happy this holiday, I was glad to see your enjoying your time off.

As for grooming Pickles. I do it myself. I took her once to someone else and that was enough. I tried to explain to them that she was a working dog and I needed to be there or she would be upset. They took her back behind a gate and told me insurance wouldn't allow me to be on the other side of the gate with her. I promptly took her home, called my vet, he showed me how to trim her nails and told me what combs, brushes would work with the type of dog she was. Now she lays down while Doc talks quietly to her lets me do her nails, stays in the tub when she gets a bath (which is more in the summer as she gets into everything) and doesn't try to get out till she's done, she loves it....I usually keep a towel just for her on the register inside the door, so when she comes inside, I automatically wipe her down, get the salt off her paws and this helps keeps her coat clean and from smelling damp.

Wishing you all the love, peace and joy you so richly deserve this holiday! (Hugs) Indigo

Goodness what a dizzying cyclone of
activity your Christmas has erupted as!
Shoot, I put the kids to work. We did toy
shopping at Target, Elsa and myself.  I ordered
a bauble from a CT bauble-maker which
arrived via UPS yesterday, and being an alert
spy I'm pretty sure what my Santa-sent
thingum will be. One of the kid's toys is
a writhing, snarling dinosaur.  I might switch, ha!
I could claim China-risk lead, or something.

I wrote an essay email to you yesterday all about
the probable difference between public schools
in LA and schools in NC. I pushed the wrong key
and lost the lot. Might try again. This time I'll just talk, maybe, about LA and leave NC alone. Wise?!
The thing is there are 10,000,000 souls (Plus!)
in LA County alone. In one small district in LA
69 languages are spoken. School classes are too big, & there're aren't enough buildings to house the school children.
On top of that, today's paper reports that the education
budget must be cut, now, as the CA economy is suffering.
TV commercials beg voters to approve Indian Gaming
which could earn billions (yes, with a 'b') to help
our economy. Nothing doing. I ain't voting for gambling!
Shoot!  (Also,  Indian Tribes have been cutting their roles
excluding iffy tribe members, so fewer will gain more
for themselves. Shhhhhh....)

This is too long for a Comment. Sorry.

Glad to see you in the "Christmas Spirit". {{}}
The tree is as cute as can be. Love the mugs, & the cake looks yummy!
I groom my girls too, I had one little dog I had to take to groomers, & I hated it, she'd always have burned spots on her & raw areas!!! Then when they got a new "dryer" in & put her in it, she almost had a heart attack! So, that was that, I never took her back, I tried at home but she never looked as cute as she shoud've, but at least she was safe, as she was getting older.
Have a Merry Christmas!

Loved your entry, Bea!  That Pineapple Upside Down Cake looks sooo good!  One of my favorites too!

I don't groom my chihuahua!  She is such a big baby.  Especially if you go any where near her nails!  They grow so long that she sounds like she is tap dancing across the kitchen floor! lol  We have to have her sedated to cute them.  Yep!  Seriously! lol

Have a Merry Christmas, Bea!

Hugs and love

I just take the dogs to the groomer when they start looking (and smelling) too funky.   We lose patience with each other when I try to do it myself.

Love those mugs...very cute!

These pictures are wonderful!  And your information is helpful too.  Many would be afraid to try it.  I do not have pets at the moment but hope to in the future.  I'd be such a good pet's mom.  I'm sooo glad you're not sick this year.  I've loved getting to putter around in the kitchen too.  You did a fantastic job on the pineapple upside down cake. They're going to love it.  I liked the MUG 'EMS idea.  I've never done that.

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS

I like a real Christmas tree but we don't have enough room in our living room so we have a small (18") fibre optic one sitting on our window sill.
That pineapple cake looks scrumptious. Reet's the pastry cook in our house but she seldom partakes these days, more's the pity.

I'm glad you're not ill this year, it will make the festivities that much more fun I'm sure.
Have yourself a happy Christmas.

To your continued good health! You have been a busy bee this Christmas season (and yes, my pitiful excuse for a pun is intentional!). I love the mug'ems, such a cute idea! Christmas tree is perfect. I don't put up a big tree but I have six miniature trees (12 inches tall) that I line up on the counter and I feel quite festive! Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!--Sheria

the mugems are so cute.my mom used to bake the best pineapple upside down cake, but she doesn't remember how to do it now.I only brush Jack. Penny would so bite everybody if we tried to groom her.Fortunately her coat is short and smooth. Her ears do need cleaning, but sorry, I need all my digits, too.
