And now it seems that I'm having to make another transition, take another detour... we all have to.
AOL journals is not going to be after October 31.... I don't know where to go just yet... I understand that I need to back up my journal pages... which will take a long time. The pictures, the entries, the photo albums, the Hometown File Manager... all will be gone.
I feel like I've woken up and someone tells me I have to move because the neighborhood is being torn down.
Well, I can't stress over this... but I will have to do something, make some changes. Sounds like another bridge to cross... I need to find out where all my journal friends are going... I am not happy about this change. Not one bit. Especially knowing I will either lose three years' worth of entries and photos, or I will be spending the next month downloading or backing it up on my computer.
I could just use this as an opportunity to start over... you know, let it all go. I was thinking of changing the name of my journal anyway... perhaps a new start is the way to go... hmm, something to think about.
I guess we'll still have the same email addresses, so we can keep in touch that way until we find a new location.
I'll be looking for your emails, then, to find out where you are.
I'm still in shock.

Bea, most of us are going to Blogger. Be sure to read Magic Smoke, because that's where all the news is. Basically, our AOL journals should transfer over to Blogger, if that's what we choose to use. Many have already made the transition and are starting to use Blogger, including me and Ken.
We're actually liking it pretty well, and others are enjoying it, too--there seems to be a lot more options with Blogger, and lots more room to "play." Come by and visit, explore a little bit, and see what you think.
Hugs, Beth

Donna has some useful information on how to back up your journal, as AOL's instructions were quite convoluted.

Most seem to have gone to Blogspot Bea....Well you know me and new tecky things !! How long has it taken me to just halfway get to grips with AOL and now I am expected to just ..GO....The stuffing has been taken out of me I am afraid. So at the moment I will just lie quiet. I am away to South Africa on Monday till the 27th. and so will have a couple of days to do something ...or not...By then hopefully I may feel a bit stonger..I am hoping some warm sunshine may regenerate some brain cells !!!!! I will so miss coming on here each morning to great friends. If you do go to blogspot or wherever drop me a line. Otherwise I will keep in touch by e mail I would be devastated to loose our friendship. Much love always Sybil xx
We are all still shocked especially about the way it was handled. I am at blogger as well. Here is my address

Hi Sweetie, most of AOL has moved over to Blogger with a few exceptions. Hope to see you there with us. Just for example I have over 80 previous AOL readers following me already. We'll help you make the transition smoothly if you decide to go this route (friends are great that way). In the meantime I'm here:

Hi Bea,
I totally understand how you feel. At first I thought they were also taking away the Profile pages......When Chris and I got married, we decided to do a "picture journal" on my profile page. I have 5 years of pictures of our kids, trips, friends, gardens etcetc. I asked AOL person why they were closing the journals and just got the run around. Has anyone found out? Wonder if that is the reason they have never fixed the function of adding pics to profiles, embedding pics in a note with using the camera icon (now we have to right click in the note and click "insert Picture" from the list) and they never fixed Spell check. I am seriously wondering why I am paying for Technical Service if they never fix anything.
Hopefully for you this is not too hard to change to a new site. My prayers are with you....
I am on blogger as well. Helen

Hi Bea,
I've moved to Blogger too. Can't remember the address offhand but it's in my latest entry.
Hope you manage to back up your files in time.

I know the shocked feeling, Bea. I compare it to being evicted but you are more accurate with the neighborhood being torn down. I'm also over at Blogger or Blogspot. I'll leave my link. You'll see a follower thing on our side bars. Click and add yourself as a follower, and then we can track each other's entries.
I saved my journal to my external drive. Donna said it works. I went into internet explorer and opened my journal under google or yahoo; anthing but AOL. I clicked under file and then save clicked save and it saved as some sort of weird file to my K drive. It does open and work. Donna opened tried saving a practice journal that way, then deleted it. It was still in her external drive after deleting; picture, entries, comments and all. It saves very fast that way. Anyway, we will get through this. We are going to take Blogspot by storm...lol. Hang in there...HUGS Chris

Hope you make the transition to BlogSpot. After a week or two, you will get used to it :o) Beth already put our new links in her comment.
I know this is all so confusing. it's like the bottom just dropped out from under us. With little time to figure out where to go or what we need to do etc...
I know alot of AOL journalers are going to Blogger. I started making one the other day. But I'm sure their will be thoes that don't like Blogger-which is fine. I just want to be able to keep up with all my friends where ever they decide to go.
I am sending my Blogger journal link to you and all the other journal friends I have. please let me know where you decide to go so that I can visit you.
HUGS~Donna

I've been moving old AOL posts to the blog I've been using since 2005 on Blogger, and when I went to move the post about the Crystal Jar, the memorial to Jay, I found the comment you had left back in July. Wow! I'd thought my AOL journal was pretty much moribund, just a repository for old posts (which now have to be packed up and moved. Bleck!)
I'm afraid that with AOL journals departing, if Barry ever does come back, he'll find his journal gone and the building empty, and I'll never know he's ok. Let me know if you ever hear from him, ok?

It is news that hits you like a ton of bricks. I just can't believe that they only gave us a month to decide what to do. For me, backing up the journals is just crazy to do. I'll save my features, but that will likely be all I try to recreate. I'm still just as disgusted with things today as I was on the 30th when I heard the news. I hope that we all land on our feet. I think that looking at it like a fresh start is the best thing to do.
Greg
I'll be moving L & F over to blogger when we get instructions. You can find me most anywhere I am by searching my screen name: bhbner2him. And I will keep my aol email address. - Barbara
