Thursday's Open House went exceptionally well... I was impressed by what appeared to be more than half of the school's parents (possibly even 75% of them) and students showing up for the Open House, standing outside in the heavy afternoon heat, as early as 30 minutes early. We could not let them in, though, because teachers were still getting their rooms into order, and needed every minute of the day given to them.
The doors promptly opened at 7 p.m.
Kids and parents were smiling... I was too. One little fella ran up to me and hugged me, "Mrs. Gilmore!" he said with such glee. Last year during Open House, beginning my first year here, one of the things I missed most about starting in a new school was familiar faces ... none of the kids knew me, so there were no hugs or smiles of recognition from them. This year, it's nice having them smile at me first! And the hugs are sweet.
Today, I spent the day looking at schedules, plans, and spent too much time getting to know our new server on the internet. Everything is different about it, and I'm sure that once I get used to it, it won't seem so awkward and difficult.
I will have to get the stand on which the monitor sits lowered, though, because it is raised too high for my short stature. I can see hours of neck pain if I sit at it too long.
There were some changes in my schedule for the first two weeks, but I will adjust to them. After that, I should be back on the schedule I had originally anticipated.
Teachers have to turn in their lesson plans before they go home every Friday. I stayed in my classroom until mine were finished... it was 5:30 when I went home. I've got to do better than this next week! Still, for me, 5:30 is good.
But if I do run until that late in the afternoon, I will have a good reason to stop at the Gym on the way home. The cardio and upper body work out starts at 5:30, and it's just around the corner from my school. Muscles getting sore from not working them like I had been doing between April and June. Need that routine again.
Thank you all for your support and positive comments in response to my latest endeavor... I've had so much fun, and I'll probably learn more new techniques as the year proceeds. Come back once in awhile to see what new project I'm working on.
And a great big thank you to Donna (Nightmaremom)... she emailed the apple tag to me tonight... what a pleasant surprise! And so timely. I hope I saved the sparkle quality.
Did she know how tired I was when I got home today? I fell asleep in the chair (pitiful) before 8: pm... it really has been a full week, and I need to start going to bed earlier.
Students will be in classes on Monday... floors are all shiny in the halls, carpets vaccuumed in the rooms, chairs on desks, lesson plans ready... I think tomorrow I may treat myself to a visit at Barnes and Nobles. There's a new store in town.

Sounds like ya'll really had an excellent turn out for open house!! I know as I went through school with Bubba, every year there were less and less folks show up. Shame they don't realize the older kids and their teachers need the support too. - BArbara
Sounds great and I love the tag! Very fitting! I think you are a wonderful teacher Bea. Your students are very lucky!
Have a great weekend and get plenty of rest, sounds as if you will need it for the week ahead!

Treat yourself to some Barnes & Noble ...and maybe some tequila! God knows I'd need some of both if I had to teach!!! I don't know how you educators survive. I applaud you.

Good Morning Bea. Do please have a wee rest this weekend. Next week will arrive before you know it !! Enjoy your shopping, treat yourself to something really nice. Have a lovely day Love Sybil x
I am looking forward to catching up on all that you and your class get up to. I think I'm just as excited at the prospect, as you and they seem, at beginning a new term. Hopes and prayers go with you all. Enjoy planting the seeds Bea.
I will come back again and watch your garden grow.

It's so exciting Bea! I also cannot wait for the new year to start. I am exhausted because it was a looooooooooong week, but it was worth it! Rest well and best wishes for Monday! ~ Caroline ~
Love the tag from Donna and yes, it's all sparkly, like your personality. Rest, put your feet up and have that tequilla that Russ recommended. Have a great first week of school.--Sheria
I noticed that tag right away. It says it all, doesn't it? Leave it to Donna to find just the right one and turn it into something perfectly personal for you, Bea.
Sounds like school, and the students are starting off the year with a positive attitude! I can't wait to hear about some of the new lessons you have this year. I always manage to learn a few things, myself. Never too old to learn something new, right?

Bea, the number of parents that showed up for open house is totally impressive. Parental support is 90% of the battle to get children to learn and be productive adults. LOL...I'm sure you will be back into your routine in no time at all. Love the tag D made! Best wishes for your first day of school and your new endeavor. I know it will be a wonderful thing. Chris
The tag is you to a T. Enjoy yourself today! I hope you took this weekend and treated yourself to some serious "Me" time. (Hugs) Indigo

It sounds like a great open house, and I hope that was a harbinger of a great school year in general. Enjoy your days at school, get that workout, and then may you have nice, peaceful evenings at home.
Lori
It sounds as if you will be working harder than ever. Schools back next week then? I wish you luck in the coming year. I know you are a conscientious good teacher from what you say you do. Make some time for yourself too though. Love Conniexx
So THIS is what teachers go thru at the start of another school year lol. Gee I should've been more sympathetic to those nuns! xoxo CATHY
Dear Bea,
what a brilliant start! It sounds wonderful already!
