I took Flat with me to school today. You can imagine the questions from the kids. They thought he was a cool dude. I told them about him, and showed them the book, The Ghost Brigades, by John Scalzi. I explained it was science fiction for adults.
Two of the boys got so excited when they saw the cover of the book. I thought it was because it was a science fiction book, and that the space ship on the cover reminded them of Star Wars or some other movie, but after I asked one boy to tell me what he liked about the cover, he said, "It's a Sci-Fi book! Sci Fi!"
This little boy is Hispanic... but he recognized the Sci-Fi symbol on the cover... from the Sci-Fi channel, I think.
I did not take photos of Flat with the children, of course, to protect their privacy rights, but I did get pictures of him at various essential points in my classroom. He was exhausted from the day in my classroom.
Then, we said our goodbyes, and I packed the little guy up to go on to his next destination. He's on his way tomorrow...

I really love the way you did these entries. Instead of going snarky or just looking for interesting juxtapositions, you've developed real a character and a bit of a storyline. Awesome! - Karen

This was funny! I bet the kids had a great time with it! What grade do you teach?
Hasn't John been making the rounds for quite some time now? It seems that when I first started reading journals, they were passing him from person to person. How did you manage to get him sent to you? Just curious..

What did you do to poor Flat? He was in quite a state when he arrived at my place. Of course, that might have been due to a weekend hung up at the border.

Ha ha ha... That Flat Scalzi sure gets around! I'm glad he wasn't posing with his evil bat boy face like he did when he showed up in Canada! Can you believe the nerve?! That flat, lovable little devil... I hope he gets home fast. Teresa is mighty angry, and I heard that she just bought herself a new paper shredder!! Julie :)
