APB alert! Missed blogger!

Friendship: on-line and off-line.

When your off-line friend doesn't call you for a few weeks, you call them to find out if they're okay. If they don't respond to phone calls, you drive to their house and ring the door bell or walk right in. You have to know if your friend is okay, because if he or she isn't, you want to be the one to help them through whatever malady has taken them away from living their life as you know it. Friends will do that for each other.

But what does one do when an on-line friend doesn't post for several weeks? You return to their journal many times and you see that the blogger isn't posting, as he was in the habit of doing for a few years. So you email him. Or her. A week passes, no response from the email. You reread past posts to find out if there were any clues about a family vacation, or possibly a planned surgery, or other intended hiaitus. You find nothing. Not a word. Even previous emails leave no suggestion that the blog writer would be away for such a lengthy time.

What do you do then? You don't know their real name, you don't know phone numbers and addresses. You just know the story of their life as they have told it in their blog and in subsequent blog-related email communications.

One of the drawbacks of establishing an on-line friendship is that when the person disappears from life, they literally disappear. When they stop posting, how long should one wait before one starts thinking they might be in the hospital, seriously sick? or worse, they're already gone from this world?

I am feeling fearful about our blogger friend, Barry. AKA, Bbartle3, of the aol journal Vengeance. He started his aol journal in 2004 with an entry about reconnecting with a former classmate that he hardly remembered, but was able to find some common memories.

He wrote the following words: "Over time, not only do people die, become incapacitated, or ill, they also store up feelings of having failed, even when there is plenty of evidence of achievement, and growth in wisdom."

I don't remember my first visit to Barry's journal, but I do remember having to read and reread his entries to find out just where he was coming from. It took some work, but I soon figured him out. And now that I haven't seen an alert from him in over two months, I'm very worried.

So this entry is my APB alert... All Points Blog alert!

Has anyone seen or heard from Barry? He's a handsome gentleman in his seventies, has a very young wife (they've been married 15 years) from South America, and four beautiful sons (the youngest is just over a year old, Marc Andrew, and he sings Beethoven!).

I did a few minutes of searching through his archives this morning just for this entry, and found what I was looking for... photos of his beautiful family. Click here for that. and here is another great photo of the whole gang.

I miss Barry's entries, often caustic, always opinionated, and always reflective. You can tell his mood once you get to know him. He's a gentleman at heart... a real gentleman.

Barry, if you read this, how about dropping me or anyone of your journal friends an email. Tell us you are away on vacation in that new car you just bought, or you off to Australia to visit your family. Please tell us something like that! Maybe your oldest daughter (previous marriage) will read this and respond.

I just want to know. Otherwise, I'm thinking you've left us for good this time. I don't like where that thought is taking me.

I'm praying for you, Barry, and your family. I hope this is just a temporary situation, and that all will be well. But I am worried.

If anyone has any inkling of information about the well-being of Barry of Vengeance, would you email me? My email address is bgilmore725@aol.com

I know who you are talking about but haven't see him about.  I hope all is ok.  If it's any help I had a friend who disappeared for months and came back....   no real reason... and I was hurt for not letting me know but I know the helpless feeling.

Yes, I've lurked on Barry's journal on many an occasion. I'm afraid I can't help you with his whereabouts. I do hope he's okay.

You might email Guido and ask him if it would be ok to copy and past this entry into his support journal. Someone who reads that journal might know something about Barry. The instructions for putting an entry in is on the left side of this journal of his. You would post in it as it it were your own journal then watch for comments. Helen

I've never seen his journal but I do know what you mean when someone just disappears. It's as you say; we can find our off line friends very easily most of the time, but this is a different situation and you can't help but wonder and be concerned. Hope all is ok with him and his family.......alice

Ah Bea, I share your concern about Barry. There has never been such a long silence from him in the past. I miss his contrary and often frustrating diatribes on a variety of topics. I've also sent emails but received no response. However, I was delighted yesterday that another mutual friend has returned, River has posted several entries in the last two days.--Sheria

I do agree Bea it is so sad when we loose contact with on line friends.  I am praying that we will get some good news soon.  Love Sybil xx

Amazing how our our-line friends tend to grow on us over time. I still miss a few poets that I met when we were on dial-up and used the aol service and how it always brought a smile when they were up to a quick chat. I tried connecting once we got a broadband connection, using my old screen names which I kept, but no answer to any of my questions in my inbox. And now that aol has deleted the "status" of mail sent, it is even more frustrating. I've been known to "google" them even, for any glimpse of current info, all to a fruitless demise. :::sigh::: I've seen Barry's name on comments before, but really don't know much about him. I'll keep my eyes out for you, if I stumble on an info.
Sincerely, Rose~*

I didn't know him but I did see his comments in other's journals.  I sure hope all is ok with him.  Actually, I've instructed my son to leave a message in my journal should anything happen.  We both use the same password.  I sure hope he does because I worry so much about my online friends.  Hope you get some info somehow.  Chris

That is the worry about online friends.  They can suddenly dissappear for no reason at all and leave one wondering and worrying about what happened to them.  I have left strict instructions with my Todd to let everyone know should anything unexpected happen to me.  I wouldn't want to leave everyone wondering!!
Have a great week Bea!
love,
Marie

Touching concern about a journalist you have come  to enjoy.  I hope you soon hear what happened.  Reminds me of when Jim Holiday did not post for a week or so.  He had fallen quite a few times, so I was concerned.  He was a funny entertaining guy (Never on Sunday)  But his wife eventually let someone know he had passed. I hope you will soon hear.  Gerry

Hello Bea   It has been so long since I have written you and I hope I have not let any communication from you go unanswered.    I could not concentrate sitting on the stool in front of my computer because of my back before surgery and then I was attempting to work on my addition over the kitchen.    I had no energy for anything else.    I thought about visiting your journal several times, as I thought about other J-land people that I have not written to for a long while.    I would visit one person and spend 10 minutes on the Internet and then go back to reading or watching TV.    Today I am doing very well sitting here and it is sunshining in the low 60's outside.    Weather still has an effect on me as I still have a lot of arthritis.    The difference is my low back where my surgery was.    I feel more strenght in my legs and basically felt like a cripple before surgery.    The bone is so strong where my surgeon removed the obstructing bone that no fusion or graft was needed.    It is the easiest back surgery one could antisipate.    About your friend though.    I am sorry that things are so up in the air and have caused you to worry about his well being.    I will email you some additional info.     mark

Hi Bea,

Thanks for visiting my journal and leaving such nice comments! Hope to see you again soon....

Hope you hear more about your friend. You're right, online friendships can be so tenuous. Good luck.

Beth
