One little dream

Dreams.

...the kind you have during the night, when you've been able to sleep continuously and deeply enough to periodically reach the lighter REM (rapid eye movement) stages... yeah those kind of dreams.

... the kind of dream that offers an explanation to a question you've had on your mind lately, or the answer to a problem you've been trying to solve.

...the kind of dream that takes you on a journey that seems to span a lifetime, or to a place that is not of this world, so fantastic yet so believable one could use the vivid imagery and bizarre events to spark a story. I imagine many books were sparked by a vivid and thrilling dream.

... the kind of dream that calms the soul. One doesn't even need to remember the details, nor any part of the dream, but if one wakes up knowing that she had been somewhere, with someone, and that something significant happened, without even knowing what or who, the accompanying sense of calmness is enough to know that it was a good dream.

Sometimes there are fragments... you only remember a single fragment, or several fragments, disjointed, seemingly unmatched and unrelated. Such dreams puzzle us, and we try to piece them back together if we can remember them long enough to do so. If you journal your dreams, you have an excellent opportunity to understand what is happening in your awake life.

Notice I did not say what is happening in your real life, for what happens to you (your psyche) in your dreams is as real to you as the events in your awake life. Fear, joy, and sadness have the same effect on your body in the dream state as when you are awake.

The Bible, a book I read nearly every day with an open mind and heart, shares stories of common men having divine dreams, visitations in the night from an angel, hearing God speaking to them. I believe the stories... that these people heard a divine message from the Lord, that God guided them, commanded them, instructed them, and reprimanded them, oftentimes he did so through their dreams. The most important result of the ancient patriarch's dreams and visions was in the manner that their lives were changed. Individuals, families, and entire communities/tribes were transformed by the direction they subsequently travelled... transformed by God, through their dreams. I'd love to write an entry about this topic, but that's not on today's agenda...

Many books have been written about dreams, interpreting dreams, how to apply what you learn from your dreams to your awake life, or dreamwork. I like to think I'm an expert at working with MY dreams. I can only ask questions of those who tell me their dreams, questions that might lead them to figure out what they mean for themselves.

But this post isn't going to be about that either.

This is about one little dream, a dream fragment I had last night.

It wasn't one of those big transforming dreams... but it did have a calming effect on me.

I feel the familiar soft fur at my leg, and for a moment he is with me, as he had been for nearly nine years. I turn and look down, and there is my Max, looking up at me, wagging his short tail.

In that moment, I reach down to him, to pat him, to touch him, and he does not walk away. I say his name "Max!... it's you.... you came back to me!" His eyes are bright, his tongue slightly hanging from his mouth, as though he had been running. I kneel beside him to hug him closer, ignoring the urge to pick him up because I know he hates to be picked up. "I knew you'd come back," I say.

For another moment, I hug and pet him around his head and ears. His coat is so soft, shiny and black.

Suddenly I realize I am dreaming, and I wake up.

Satisfied, I smiled... I had my Max dream. He's okay, I'm okay. I was waiting for that. He died March 15... all I could think as I lay in bed this morning was, "Max, what took you so long!"

And that is what this post is about. One little dream.

Also, I had a great day with my BIL and SIL and my DH.

What a wonderful dream you had, Bea. Max must have taken the time to stop and smell the flowers along the way first, but at last he made it home. (((HUGS)))

Dear Bea, what a lovely dream,,,I am sure you will hang on to it forever.  I very seldom dream, but often wish I could..they say everyone does have dreams but that they just don't remember them...thats me mostly.  My sister when she was younger used to be able to wake from a dream think about it and go back and get the end !!  Today is a mixed day for me as it is 14 years almost to the minute since my dear Mum died. I say mixed as I am glad she is now free from all her pain and worries but sad for myself as I miss her so so much.  Love for now  Sybil xx

I have had dreams like that Bea.  They're just wonderful.  A chance to spend a few moments with a lost loved one or pet.  I think they are a gift.  I know they have been to me.  Glad you had a lovely day out!
love,
Marie

Bea, your entry brought tears to my eyes!  I cried when I read about Max passing away, so this made me feel heartwarm for you. I'm glad you got to see him again - to get that little bit of comfort that almost adds closure.  I'm also glad you had a good day yesterday. ~  Caroline  ~

Aw, Bea, this sounds like a healing moment.  I used to dream very frequently about our first dog, Missie, after she died suddenly.  I'm so glad Max came back to visit.  Chris

I can remember having a very similar dream about my mum a little while after she died.
I remember saying to her "I'm glad you cam back."
And she replied "So am I."

The smallest fraction of a dream, but it's enough, and so comforting.
I'm pleased Max came by to say hello to you.

Great entry, Bea, and I'm happy for you that you were able to get the comfort of Max visiting you in a dream. I've experienced that, too, with family members who have passed away. It really CAN be a comfort.

Take care,
Beth

Thanks for dropping by my journal, kbear's heart    i've just read this entry and will return soon, glancing at some other entries   i'll be adding you to my journal list to read   my poem on God, i got at my church, religous science-NOT scientology   it is a philosophy and more   a different approach to what God is all about  we believe God is everyone and everything, a Presence and intelligent force within ALL    anyways, i could discuss this more but that would take several cups of coffee conversations  there are more entries in my journal which reflect different thoughts regarding God   we allow everyone to call God whatever works for each individual: It, He, She, Allah, Buddha, God, etc.   I love the poem i put in my journal   i read it not often enough   i'm happy you enjoyed it!   hope you keep stopping by   i'm on my spiritual journey learning truth wherever i find it   i love hearing perspectives of others as well   i look forward to reading more of your journal   thanks again....karen

I was just thinking about you so strong, and the subject of my thoughts was dreams!  I am so glad you had your dream about Max.  And I like you was greatly influenced by the dreams I read in the bible which helped me to believe in my own message dreams.  I wanted to tell you if you have not already done so, to read Cindy's wonderful dream about visiting the half sister I believe it is she lost a while back.  In Cindy's Life.  Joyce of Treasure Chest of Life has also recently shared with us the most wonderful dream about a spirit call from her mother she lost a while back and her dad.  Now you have added your remarkable dream to theirs.  I must tell Pam the nurse about yours, too, as she so longs to reach her mother, she has been so ill the last while. I have told her to do just as you have done, put in her order, and eventually the dream visit will come!   Gerry

I always enjoy reading your journal because I know that since you are a teacher, you are careful to make your writing as close to professional, as would an author.    Not just the technical, but the contents and story.    Dreams are a part of sleep.    Without sleep people become unstable, and can have serious health problems.   I slept a lot today, since midnight until 5 p.m, after having to go through a medical purge for a barium test, that I was then told was incomplete and needed more purging.     I decided to forego the entire test.     So, along with the weather change that affects my arthritis and upper back, I just decided to stay in bed and sleep for as long as I desired, instead of calling the doctor's office, that wanted  my return call.   Before my back surgery, I did not get more than 3 to 4 hrs. sleep at a time, and only with medication.    Now, since my lumbar laminectomy,  I have been able to sleep longer without interuption.    I feel resolved on my waking issues, and also like I can make a decision without flip-flopping.    That is what dreaming does for me.    It unwinds my mind and leaves me as normal as I can be.    mark

I think it is wonderful that you had a great dream about your beloved pet dog.     As a person I discussed my attitude on religion with said: 'animals have a spirit, where people have a soul'.    His comment had been in response to mine, on my attitude about religion which was that people have a 'soul'.    I said that if I did not recognize that, I would feel that I was 'evil'.    mark
