Family photos and author's purpose

Friday evening

My camera batteries, the rechargeable ones, finally lost their rechargeability. I haven't taken pictures in over two weeks. I keep forgetting to buy the batteries when I'm out shopping, but with the Christmas Season coming on, and the opportunities to take great pictures of family and friends numerous, I must buy those batteries this weekend.

Came home from school today and there was the Christmas tree... just the tree... our man-made one.... standing up in the living room! My husband had today off, and had set it up for me... it's a seven footer, which isn't tall by some tree standards, but it's not a piece of cake to assemble. However, the lights are next on the tree agenda, and I'm not relaxed enough to do them tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

I want to include a family Christmas photo this year in my journal. I'd love to see journalers with their families, sometime during the following weeks, on up through New Year's.

I know some of us are quicker to put pictures in our journals than others, but I was wondering, whether you read my journal or you are a new visitor, would you take a family photo and put it in your journal, then come back and leave a link? Or if you are not comfortable with that, because it is the internet afterall, maybe you wouldn't mind sending me an email with your family photo?

Please take a new picture this year.... nothing old from last year! I'm going to try to get a photo of my family, but it may be difficult to get everyone's permission to post it here. I won't be able to post a big family photo until after Christmas day, however, because that is the day we all get together.

I read about you all nearly every day, and you tell stories about the family, with names sometimes, but often times without names. Still, I do relate your screen names with your journals, and your journals with a general theme. Sometimes I imagine your family, your home... not for any predatory intention, of course !... but it's the way I read a book. It's the way I get involved with the characters of a story.

All of our journals have characters, settings, themes, even plots and subplots. Without even realizing I'm doing it, whenever I read something, I find myself making predictions. If I'm not making predictions, I'm making generalizations, drawing conclusions, and making inferences.

I can't help myself... I'm a teacher, and I teach reading comprehension skills to three different grade levels. I am generally aware of these concepts as I read most anything. At the back of my mind, I'm looking for examples I can use in the classroom... no, I don't use your journals or mine as a teaching tool. <grin> It just wouldn't be ethical.

Besides, there are plenty of other examples to use all around me: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, school announcements, invitations, posters, etc., and the thousands of books in the school itself.

Today, I taught author's purpose. The third grade students had to sort several fiction and non-fiction descriptions of written materials into two groups: to inform and to entertain. They were given cards with the description of a text, such as recipes, a book of riddles, a newspaper article about the president, a book of fables, and so on. They seemed to be sure of the texts that were written to inform, but there were a few that were clearly (to me) written to entertain that seemed to confound them. A book of riddles and a book of myths and legends slowed them down a bit. They weren't sure about myths, and only slightly familiar with legends. After I described a few myths and legends, they correctly identified the author's purpose: to entertain.

It seems that my journal has two purposes: to entertain and to inform. It's somewhat biographical, with a few amusing stories now and then, and some informative entries with links and facts .... as my interests and the calling of my profession guide me, and my energy level allows!

What would you say is the purpose of your journal? To entertain, inform, or persuade?

Interesting entry!   I'll take some photos of my family and post them...
As for my journal (s), I guess I'd say they're a little bit of everything!

My present journal entry is bereft of Comments.
The language, the subject matter, the off-putting,
aggressive tone is not conducive of conversation:
if there is a problem, so goes my rumination on the
subject, is peculiar to me, and could never be of
general interest. And, there is no photo.

I deliberately stay away from photos. I also stay
away from all forms of decoration and stick to
language, English. Photos and decorations are
easy to read, generally, but language, written, is
a whole other matter. Even though I know the subject
is unpopular here's one Academic's take on writing and
language:

1. All language is metaphor
2. Writing is aggression
3. Language is anti-phobic
4. All writing is fantasy
5. Writing is violence
6. ALL WRITING IS UNSTABLE AS TO MEANING

The above six items I found at random,
scattered through many pages of
  THE HAUNTING OF SYLVIA PLATH
by Jacqueline Rose, London University

My hunch is that the book, overall,
might have initially been part of work
for an advanced degree.

My Comment might not post, being
so long.

Doubt if hubby will ever agree to me sharing a picture on the web in any way.  He is very suspicious of the whole thing.  Purpose of my journal?  Set forward in my description:  'Stories of my life as a redneck in the Piney Woods of Southeast Texas, sprinkled with insights from my walk with Jesus.  Hopefully humorous, encouraging and sometimes inspiring!  The unvarnished truth of my life as wife, mother, homemaker and His Work in Progress " -  I think I stick to it for the most part.  It often leans in one direction more than another from time to  time.  -  Barbara

Just a question:  If I change my journal to beta, do my readers need to reset their alerts?

Hi Bea!  I love the learning exercise that you did with your third graders.  I do have an observation about the author's purpose with myths and leglnds.  I think that some writers intend to inform with those genres although we are likely to read them for entertainment.  Certainly the myths of the Greeks, Native American tribes, etc. were meant to teach/inform their respective peoples.  I find that it is often difficult to identify writing as having a  singular purpose.  Like you, I intend my journal to inform and entertain, but in some posts, I clearly want to persuade.  In others, I want to make people question, to think about their own beliefs and the source of those beliefs.  One of my favorite sayings is from Socrates, "The unexamined life is not worth living."  Whatever we may believe, we should have some foundation for those beliefs other than that someone else told us what to believe.--Sheria

I write to inform, Bea, with sometimes quite an opinionated slant. Hope you managed to get new batteries today, Saturday

I think the purpose of my journal is to vent, entertain and inform.  More to vent and entertain though.
I am like you with putting faces to journals, and trying to imagine the house, the street, the whole setting.  I try to get into the heart and soul of the writer, so that I can respond in my comment in a like manner.

I put pictures up in my journal all the time, just not of me, only because I am paranoid about that, after what happened with my job.  It just freaks me out.

Since I don't really do people photography, I doubt there will be a family portrait done with my family.  I just came from a large family get together where I had my camera, but nobody expressed any interest in getting everyone together for a picture...I didn't push it.  As far as the purpose of the journal, I would say to entertain and inform.  I can't really place a time where you tried to persuade your audience on anything.  However, I think you missed the main purpose of your journal, as well as most others.  It is here to express what you would like to share with others, and a place to document who you were at a certain time and place.

No, Greg, you are right, mine is not one to persuade, and I've never had the intent on doing that in my journal. I don't even try to persuade others when I am speaking. Generally.

Sometimes, though, I do write with the intent to inform, or the intent to entertain, but mostly, I just like to write about where I am in my life, in my heart, and in my head. In a way, it's to inform ... about ... me. A little self-interest there... don't you think? <grin> bea
