National Aquarium Highlights

Today I want to give you a special treat. You are going to see something you may not have seen before. I hope there is something original in the content for you. You won't find Nemo, so don't even look for him, but if you follow closely, toward the middle, you will see his forgetful friend, Dory. She's blue.

It took me a few hours to finish this project because I actually made three versions to find out which one I liked best. This one made the cut.

I decided against filling the video with profound quotes, as was my original intent. I wanted to bring attention to the fact that life on this planet is a gift, and that if we don't heed the warnings from conservationists and ecologists regarding the disappearing Rain Forest, and the pollution of our rivers and seas, we will lose that gift. Gradually, animal and plant species will leave us forever, and possibly the only place you will see such abundance of color and life will be in man-made reserves, zoos, and aquariums. Not the ideal living environment.

I imagine it would be like you and I having to live out our days in a glass-walled condo, with the doors locked so we could never go outside into the real world. Or possibly to live in a man-made biosphere that confined us to our immediate neighborhood. We'd look like we were living a normal life, but we would lose our connections with the greater environment, and we'd lose our relationship with the world.

The music I chose for this video has a haunting, dramatic sound to it... I like the sense of expectancy the music lends to the video.

So, without spoiling it for you, I think you will like the last few seconds... it's about the Green Sea Turtle that lives permanently in the aquarium. It was a popular exhibit... <smile>

I hope you feel a sense of hope than of dread as you watch and listen. The hope is in you. The hope is that you will become aware of environmental concerns in your area, and find out how you can help. Be part of a group that cleans the river, that picks up the litter on the street. Talk about recycling, get involved in community recycling projects. Contribute to a group that takes care of animals until they are well enough to return to their habitats, or to a group that is fighting to protect a habitat or environment. Don't think someone else is going to do it. Usually a handful of people will step up to do the footwork, but they need the support (financial and labor) of other caring citizens like you.

That's what I was thinking while I admired man's effort to help preserve God's creation, and to help educate the public on the value of life beneath the sea.

I really enjoyed the stroll through the National Aquarium with my son and husband... it was very calming despite the number of families there for a day with their dads. There was a show in the Immersion Theater, a 4-D experience ... quite startling, but lots of fun.  We had to wear those 3-D glasses, but rather than spoil the surprises of a 4-D experience, I will just say, you get wet, bubbles float down from the ceiling, and you feel like you are underwater with the sea critters. Also, the dolphin show was entertaining and educational as well. You just gotta love those dolphins leaping high into the air... they love to play!

I quickly filled my 2Gb digital camera memory chip, and wished I'd had another. Next time I'll take two memory cards with me. I like to take pictures when we're on vacation, but even more, I love to take the video clips so I can make a movie with them later on.

I hope you enjoy this five minute peek into the National Aquarium, located at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland. And finally, thank you to our son who bought our tickets as a Mother's/Father's Day treat... we enjoyed every minute of it! And I plan on coming back, Steven, before school begins in August.

Next time, I want to check out that Body Worlds show at the Maryland Science Museum. Oh, and the American Visionary Art Museum... I really want to check that out next time!

Hi Bea,

I lived in Joppatown near Baltimore for 2 years 2000 to 2002, and worked in Baltimore.  I have been to the Aquarium several times and it is wonderful...thanks for the video....it is beautiful.

Bea, that was excellent! Is there no end to your creativity? Your musical choice was perfect.

And amen to your sentiments about making a difference. As individuals, we often can't make a huge difference, but there are a whole lot of us, and together we CAN make a difference when it comes to the environment! We have recycling pickup in our county, and a while back, we really started to step up when we put out for recycling. Our recycling is now easily probably 10 times what our garbage is!

Thanks for making this video and sharing it with us. Wonderful!

I have really started to enjoy aquariums as I have aged.  I never really used to like them that much, but their beauty is really making itself apparent to me, and my "new eyes".

Bea, thank you so much for this video and your comments about our future on earth.  Sadly we have hardly even begun to save the oceans - most of the planet.  We've come a long way from when I was a youngster.  The terms air, ground and water pollution weren't in anyone's vocabulary.  I try to be optimistic.  Hopefully it's not too late and that the biosphere is not our future.

Like your last commenter I agree that we have come a long way from when I was a child.  We never talked about things such as being "green" back then or conserving anything.  The world just seemed to be one huge resource that we plundered and enjoyed.  Thankfully we are more aware these days, even if we do have a long way to go still.  Education and awareness are the keys.  We do recycle here, but for now it's just bottles and cans and paper things.  They don't have the fascilities to do plastic as of yet, but hopefully soon.  It does make for a bit of extra work for the consumer but it's all worth it.  I wish that companies would cut down more on packaging.  There still seems to be an awful lot of it and for what . . . it all gets thrown away . . .
Thanks for another lovely and educational post Bea!
love,
Marie

What a super presentation and how generous of you to share it with us.  I'm definately going to have to learn how to do that ( when and if I get time )  It did give me a sense of hope, albeit temporary.  I can't save the world, but I may be able to make my little corner a little more enjoyable while I'm here.

It was a lovely video, thank you.  I believe we have been given stewardship over the earth and are making a poor job of it, but i also believe God is not going to let anything happen to it outside of his will. Some green issues i find are a government scam and a way of making money.  I think we have to be discerning.

Bea, you were only a 90 minute drive from us! The National Aquarium in Baltimore is AMAZING! Most extraordinary of all is its wheelchair accessibility especially the way the viewing windows spiral from the surface to the ocean floor.

Our last visit I had to quest in search of Poe's grave. A stiff walk from the Aquarium and NOT an easy tourist attraction to find but my daughter and I were successful!!

We enjoyed that turtle through the years. It has a particular appeal to a family living with a chronic disability.

Bea, this is a beautiful video. Your musical selection was a perfect choice to match the wonder and mystery of the beautiful creatures. So much wondrous color, the anemones looked like a flower garden under water!--Sheria

Bea,,
Thank you for the wonderful visit.  I will have to share with you in another missive my part in putting the aquarium together.  I used to work at the corner of Charles and Lexington streets in downtown "Balmer".  I have some fond, fond memories.  Thanks again.

I am going to go home and watch the video in the quiet of my apt.  I am down to Doc's at the moment.  I do agree that we need to be environment conscious.  Kelli of Noonmom wrote about picking up trash on a beautiful beach.  It is too bad the way people litter and spoil the landscape. A father teaching his kids how to start a fire started a fire up on the mountain where my family has a heavily wooded mountain pasture, so they were all very concerned.  There is a lot of worry about with the ice all melting and bringing changes.  It is good to be as aware as possible of these changes in my opinion.  I am going to go home and read your entry more carefully when I watch the video.  Gerry http://journals.aol.com/gehi6/daughters-of-the-shadow-men/

I watched this lovely video relaxing up to my place.  I am very curious about how a movie like this is made.  You said that you like to take video clips from which you make a movie.  Well, I am learning more about it all the time.  My son Dan is an expert as he went to film school five years.  He helped me get started making videos.  It is so much fun.  I am learning to take photos as I go, too.  But the creatures in this video were so beautiful.  I just loved it.  Thank you so much for showing it.  Gerry http://journals.aol.com/gehi6/daughters-of-the-shadow-men/

Very much enjoyed the film. I agree wholeheartedly about saving our environment. If I could add one more thing to your thoughts, and that is to stop our Senators and Representatives from allowing the oil companies to drill off shore and in our nature reserves. Time to find an alternative fuel supply. One that is safe and renewable.
